Akademischer Realismus (oder auch Salonmalerei genannt) war ein europäischer Kunststil vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert, einer seiner Vertreter war der britische Kunstmaler John William Waterhouse, dessen Stil diese Bildkompositionen sehr beeinflußt hat. Die Akademische Kunst legte sich auf einen überwiegend literarische, mythologische und historische Themen fest, sie ist überwiegend nicht realistisch, sondern idealistisch.

Academic realism (also known as salon painting) was a European art style from the 17th to the 19th century. One of its representatives was the British painter John William Waterhouse, whose style greatly influenced these compositions. Academic art focuses on predominantly literary, mythological and historical themes; it is predominantly not realistic, but rather idealistic.
